The Things They Carried
Three-person teams will run 800m carrying various objects from the box:
1x95lb Barbell
1x53lb Kettlebell
1x20lb Medball
Once the team is back in the gym, they will chip away at the following bodyweight tasks:
100 Pullups
200 Pushups
300 Squats
The team then finishes with another 800m run, again with The Things They Carried. Post time and thoughts to comments.
Intermediate: 65 barbell, 35 KB, 20lb medball, 75 Pullups (or ring rows), 150 Pushups, 225 Squats
Elements: try to use Intermediate weights, 50 Pullups, 100 Pushups, 150 Squats
A Calorie is Not Just a Calorie
Remember: the gym will be CLOSED tomorrow, July 4th. Please come out for the Broomall Firecracker 5K and walk in the parade with us afterward!

One note on the carrying portion of the workout. Teammates may trade off the things they are carrying throughout the 800 meters. Walking fast with 95 lbs on your back is harder than it sounds.
If anyone wants to read the title story of Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried,” you can read it here: http://classes.dma.ucla.edu/Spring02/160-1/Obrien.html
Please read the O’Brien story. It’s really great . . .
Awesome 5:30 Class!!! We did 2 teams of 4 and 1 team of 3… someone was a no show.. hmmm..
The teams of 4 also carried a 25lb plate so everyone got to carry something! We also added more reps so no one had an advantage. 2 people were allowed to work at one time.
I loved the look on the guys face while everyone ran by with barbells, kb and med balls.. oh my!
This was a really fun WOD.
Whiskey Richard (Andrew, Kyle, myself) – 31.40 something. This is a great team building exercise. I may try to implement something like this at my work once a month.
The looks on the passing cars was absolutely priceless.
Have a great 4th…..
Never have I experienced a more humbling moment than seeing my teammate sprint past me with a 95lb bar on his back, while I’m carrying a 20lb medicine ball. I want Ryan as my partner for every team wod from now on.
Haha thanks Annimal! – I think I’m just overly competitive. It was an all-around great team effort and I loved how well we worked together to chip away at it. This was a fun one.
Team DRAD (Dave, Ryan, Annimal, Diana): 31:19
Yay Team DRAD!
The four of us trying to figure out how to divy up this WOD reminded me of that riddle about the chicken and the fox and crossing the river with a bag of grain. Anyone know what I’m talking about? No? Anyway, great job by the 5:30 class. Hope everyone has a great 4th!
Awesome Awesome time this morning and thank you Maura who did a superb job filling in for Chris this morning.
Great job to all teams, Ryan who sprinted with the bar, and especially my team who we all worked really well together and chipped away at it.
Whiskey Richard (Phil, Kyle, and myself) 31:40 or whatever Phil put.
Also, thank you Maura for taking pictures and showing what actually does go on during the 5:30 am class!!! Love family(team) photo day.
A lady in a car rolled down her window and asked me if I was OK. “Jet” said, “she’s great!” and the lady drove off . . . We did this in 37:32.
Lunch time at Globo gym-
Squat 3x5x330
5 Rounds of-
Max Push-ups (20, 13, 10, 10, 10)
Sprint 50 Yards (was really only like 30)
Rest = the walk back to the starting line.
Was supposed to be 10 rounds but I was short on time. Also, I suck at push-ups.
That was so funny, Lauren. That lady must have been about 101 years old. Can only imagine what she was thinking..!
There was a lot more strategy to that WOD than meets the eye. Thanks team! Wanna try it again… next year?
Definitely a cool WOD. Great planning led to solid results. Our team (Jabari, John, and Alex) completed the RX in 25:34. Communication and common sense was key. I definitely prefer to carry the 95lb barbell over the kettle bell. Can’t wait to see whats next. Great job to all the teams!
I had the two greatest partners who literally held my hands and that stupid KB on my final 100m in. And they didn’t care that I only carried the 95# barbell for about 200m. Thanks Karl and Ben!!
We Hold Hands While We WOD: 28:ish Rx except I subbed ring rows after doing 1 pullup. Congrats to Karl who got his first hand rip. Now you are elite!
Happy 4th and see y’all for the world’s hottest 5K!
